Throughout Neil Young's career, his music has explored themes of rural American life. In the country song "Are There Any More Real Cowboys?," he's lamenting the loss not only of cowboys but also of traditional country and family values. Interestingly, Young specifically goes after fake cowboys "snortin' cocaine when the honky-tonk's all closed.".

Everybody's Rockin' today holds the honor of being the only Neil Young album that pissed Geffen tropes about cowboys ("Are There Any More Real Cowboys?") and the farming lifestyle ("Old Ways.

'Old Ways' is the second of the Geffen records Neil released in the 80's and album I'd missed this one in vinyl after "Everybody's Rockin'". CD's were all the rage that decade. The music on this album is first rate with enough friends and session players to give it a big sound. Stand-out tracks include, "Are There Any More Real Cowboys?".

In the title track, with Young picking slow and hard at his acoustic over bluesy accompaniment, he allows that "old ways can be a ball and chain." Come to think of it, Willie Nelson doesn't sound entirely comfortable on "Are There Any More Real Cowboys?" – which might be more .
