Apr 25,  · Today Mississippi Goddam is remembered as one of the most notable protest songs of the civil rights movement. She unapologetically addresses the injustices of the time, something that many people would have not been courageous enough to do. She was one of the few artists brave enough to openly sing about what was really going on at the time.

“Mississippi Goddam” would prompt a scandal – because it soon became obvious to everyone that the story of this song had already happened for real. It refers to the murder of the Black American activist Medgar Evers, assassinated in June in Jackson, Mississippi, by a White supremacist, a member of the Ku Klux Klan.
